Upcoming Election Two
positions are now available as a result of resignations: 1)

vacated by Thomas Vandiver 2)
Treasurer – Jimmy Brown will stay until replacement is elected. If you are interested, or would like to add a name to the nominee list, contact Olin Wilson. The deadline for submitting bios is May 1. The
Treasurer’s position requires that the person be bonded.
Of course, some knowledge of finances and bookkeeping would be
necessary. The
Vice President’s position does not have any specific qualifications
but individual should be knowledgeable about NPA, the bylaws, the
Roberts Rules of Order, and be able to replace the President if
necessary. The position is
also the backup for the Tournament Director. Fund Raising Committee Project

Even
though the time was off schedule, there were apparently a couple of
“first” for a semi-annual: 1)
59 tables 2)
the 50/50 winner received a record payout.

There are two “reserved”
bids: an opening
bid of 51 indicates aces around, and a bid of 59 indicates double
aces. 3.
Learn how to talk to others!
It is a proven fact that it is better to praise in public and
critique in private. Don’t
scorn your partner at the table and in front of other players.
Offering others encoura- ging words when needed goes a long way. 4.
Always have fun playing! If you have any comments, please
contact me at 334-354-0253. ~~~~~~~~Rick Rickerson~~~~~ NEWS, NEWS, NEWS
Each chapter should have something new to share with others
every month. Recently many
of you have had elections, and the new officers should be listed for
the benefit of others, for benefit of the Corresponding Secretary, and
distribution of the newsletter.
If you have questions about NPA or any aspect of it, what
better place to ask, and receive an answer from the appropriate
committee, officer, etc.
Chapters – tell the rest of NPA some of your projects, when
members get together to play (in case a visitor to your area wants to
play) – anything you are proud about to share.
The newsletter is for the purpose of sharing information.
News cannot be printed unless it is provided to the Editor.
Remember birth dates are still printed if provided.
It is not necessary to provide a birth year. ~~~~~~~~~~~~Editor~~~~~~~~~~

many people and
the greatest surprise of my life. The
event will always be remembered. In
fact, there were several surprises: (1)
My husband Leroy meeting me at the door (I would have bet $100
that no one would have gotten Leroy to attend this event). (2)
This did not give me a clue. (3)
Andre not playing in a tourna- ment at home
(unbelievable). (4)
Hearing the record, “Pinochle Really Turns Me
On,” a song written by Mrs. Johnnie Davis in 1996, put the icing on
the cake.
For those of you that did not attend, let me share with you this
spectacular activity. The
event was held at the home of Andre and Donnella (wife) DeBose.
So close your eyes and visualize my husband Leroy and Donnella
meeting me at the door and escorting me through the house to an Olympic
size pool with a paved deck that was well lighted and decorated with
multi-colored inflated balloons in an arch.
As we entered, more than 40 people rose from their chairs and
yelled ‘surprise’!!!! I
was dumbfounded. Leroy and I
were seated at the south end of the pool under a chickee (a Palmetto
hutch). Our table and all
other tables were decorated with a red and silver centerpiece with a
pinochle hand in the middle.
Appetizer: Pork
souse and chicken souse
Menu: BBQ Ribs, Rotisserie and BBQ Chicken, Fried Chicken
Wings, stuffed Tilapia, Ceasar salad, potato salad, rolls, lemon pound
cake, apple pie a la mode, and assorted canned sodas
The food was delicious. Page 3 ________________________________________

During the meal I was ‘roasted’ by a group of
‘Professionals’ (it was hard to believe there were no rehearsals)
– they were excellent. The
printed program was well planned and it should have been taped.
You really missed a treat. I
understand all chapters participated.
I assure you, I am deeply grateful.
I received gifts and my first ever ‘money tree’ with branches
containing $219.00. I will
always cherish these gifts. While
sitting next to my husband reading the information Gilbert (Doc) Raiford
had obtained for his ‘scrapbook,’ I thought my heart would burst.
Doc was so convincing, we live 30 miles apart and he made two trips.
Most of his information was accurate with the exception of it was
only a 41 bed nursing home, and I was not the first chairperson of
Research and Education. As
my traveling mate and favorite grand nephew, Andre often pushed my
wheelchair. On two occasions
as we got near the airport stairway, he would let
go of the wheelchair. So
for him not to play in the tournament and prepare such an elaborate
affair was “Awesome.” I
really did not think he cared that much about me.
“Nothing ever remains the same.”
We have a great organization, with people of all walks of life
that have the knowledge, skills, talents, and capabilities to do
anything. With the constant
growth of the NPA we need to start thinking about the future.

LOST
AND FOUND
Lost and found are loves and treasures on the roads we walk in
life.
Joys and heartaches, pains and pleasures mixed with happiness
and strife.
Some to flourish, some to vanish, some to bring us smiles or
tears – adding treasures or displeasures to our youth and graying
years.
From such turns of heart and mind; every one is part of living,
and to be of every kind. | ||||||
